The Status of Immunization of Infants in a Rural Area of Korea

Abstract
This survey was conducted to find out the status of immunization of infants in a rural area of Korea. The rural areas which were chosen for the survey were 9 guns(counties) in Gyeonggi-do(province), Korea. The subjects were 13 to 24 month old children 1,362 in total number. The survey was conducted by the means of home visiting with formulated questionnair papers by the nurses or aid-nurses who were attached to the local health centers. The mothers of the subjects predominantly were responsive ot the inquiry and the status of immunizations in infancy of their children was surveyed.
The results of this survey were as follows:
1) Of the total subjects 9.6% had never taken any immuneization.
2) The place where the immunizations were performed was predominantly health centers with the rate of 88.0%, and 8.6% at hospitals.
3) The primary motivation of the immunizations was notification from a health agency with the rate of 58.6%, and another one was their own willingness with the rate of 12.8%.
4) The rate of immunization against smallpox was 69.5%.
5) The rate of immunization against poliomyelitis was 60.9%. Of these of Salk vaccine use and Sabin vaccine use were 30.3% and 69.7% respectively.
6) The rate of immunization against measles was only 10.1%.
7) The rate of BCG immunization was 63.7%.
8) The rate of K.P.T. immunization was 65.6%
9) the rates of individuals possessing an immunization schedule and record were 26.9% and 38.2% respectively.
10) Generally the time schedule of immunization and the frequency of shots were not kept well.
